Latour’s bold prints 👁️ @musee.reattu, Arles Fine Arts (many photos taken at the expo hence slight reflections) filled me full, shook my shimmy and tickled my tush. Visit Arles my friends..’Je suis sous le charme’, culture, roman amphitheatres, the weave of the Rhône, local wines, tradition ooze, museums any art lover would be swooning over, modern’ism’ (Jean Nouvel tower, @leeufanarles ), tiny beautiful boutiques @moustiquearlesofficiel , Camargue horses flamingos🦩 and bulls, salts and squids close enough to visit in a morning & the beach not far away. Avignon by train, a close neighbour too. Break away and stay Hotel de l’Anglais (Filipe & Pierrick will look after you, trust me, they are extraordinary). Arles mon amour ♥️.

Alfred Latour 1888 – 1964
French painter, engraver, graphic & fabric designer, excellent photographer.

His father was a printer & typographer at the Imprimerie Nationale. Alfred was born into a working-class neighbourhood, in the 12th arrondissement, Paris.

Latour was always highly independent, individual and reserved, and had no inclination to draw attention to himself..(last photo: his powerful, uneven face). Nevertheless, the world took notice, and he is very much remembered: his work can be seen in Paris, Lyon, Marseilles, Arles, Martigues (between Montpellier & Marseilles), The British Museum and The Victoria and Albert Museum, plus the National Library of the Netherlands. Also part of many private art collections.

The Alfred Latour Foundation was established (2004) in Fribourg, Switzerland (between Lausanne & Bern in case you travel to either and have time..)

We are so programmed to respond to youthful beauty, but old beauty is a poignant poetry all of its own. You just need love in your eyes, patience & playfulness.

Tony Luciani’s nonagenarian mother moved in with him 4 years after breaking her hip. Already an artist, he used his new camera to reflect on her dementia, and to ignite Elia’s sense of self worth by having fun with her, and probably also, to stay smiling himself.

Originally from the tiny mountain village of Carrufo, Italy, Elia Luciani was ‘married off..by proxy’ at just 13. She later moved to Canada, where she was lucky enough to end up being cared for by her son.

Good to finally meet you.
Sardinian graphic designer, sculptor.

Nivola’s meeting with Le Corbusier in 1946, was a defining moment. The cultural shock of exile & relocation to the USA initiated a phase of disorientation & doubt for many, but meeting Le Corbusier in particular, put an end to Nivola’s artistic uncertainties. He met dozens of fellow European artists & architects who had emigrated to escape Nazi persecution.

Constantino met ‘Le Corbu’- the master of modernism just after Le Corb. arrived in NY. They were both members of an international team of architects in charge of designing the new United Nations HQ, and they began a friendship destined to last until Corbusier’s death in 1965.

*colour watercolour of Ruth Guggenheim (jewellery designer) and Constantino Nivola’s house in Springs, a village in The Hamptons, has been featured in every classy interiors magazine. (Mural here by Le Corbusier, black sculpture by Nivola). A 1754 cottage, it was bought by the couple in 1948.

*pink poster:
1936-38, Nivola worked in Milan as a graphic designer for Olivetti. Thanks to Adriano Olivetti, everything to do with communication, product design and the architecture of Olivetti’s factories, was firmly based on artistic principles (see Carlo Scarpa’s 1958 Olivetti contribution in Venice 👐🏼)

One of the first developers Olivetti’s image, Nivola produced posters & advertising campaigns which were extraordinarily innovative at the time. *spectacular Nivola mural at Olivetti New York.
